Extending the Patriot Act: It's Not Just a Bush Thing Anymore

People are angry with the Obama administration for one of the many reasons they were angry with the Bush administration. Apparently, President Obama changed his mind about the Patriot Act, one of the most unconstitutional violations of civil liberties ever to be conceived - and he wants to extend it. So what exactly does the Patriot Act do? Let's review:

1) Terrorism laws include "domestic terrorists," which in the case of the government, might include protesters and organizations that do not fit within the administration's ideology.

2) Law enforcement is given more power to conduct secret searches, including warantless wiretaps and access to medical, business, library, and phone records. Basically, your right to privacy is completely stripped if the government, police, or other body of law enforcement says it is, even if you have not been proven guilty or evident of committing crimes.

3) The FBI can investigate people without any valid reason whatsoever. If it's for "intelligence purposes," you're forced to cooperate against your will.

>4) Non-citizens can be jailed upon mere suspicion, without being proven guilty of any crime. They can be held in six-month increments, and may even be deported and denied re-admission to the United States for engaging in free speech.

There is no way that these policies can be sustained under our Constitution without violating it, which is done anyway. So how does the government justify it? One word:

Security.

Tell me how this is not scary. It's sickening how the government uses "security" to justify its pursuit of power. This is all it's about, folks: power. The Patriot Act is supported by both Democrats and Republicans, despite the public outrage that has stemmed from it. Sure it takes away necessary freedoms in the name of security, but hey, it's "protecting the people." Instead of ceasing all warfare to reduce hostility and violence abroad, let's just throw the Constitution right out the window and pretend that we still care about our Founding principles.

The American people aren't that stupid, are they?

Liberty is at the heart of our very existence. If we throw it away, what do we get? Well, folks, we get an ever-expanding government that will just keep taking away our freedoms until they own our bodies, property, and lives. Without freedom, the people will be powerless and ultimately unhappy. Without our happiness and our livelihood, we won't have anything. Our society will crumble before our very eyes. It will become unproductive and stricken with poverty, and we will only have a global elite to help us get out of it.

People need space. People need to be left alone. People need air to breathe, they need to be content within the safety of their homes, and they need the freedom to do the things that make them happy without harming anyone else. Is it so much to ask the power-hungry leaders of the world to get off our backs and let us be? Must we resort to becoming slaves of a powerful force of greed and totalitarianism that wants nothing but the complete and utter destruction of our Founding principles?

You lied, President Obama. This isn't the change that we sought. We thought you'd be different, but we were wrong. Not only did you betray the very people that supported you, but you betrayed the rest of America as well.

Freedom is a precious gift. When we are free, we can prosper and live the way that we want to. I know damn well that I'm much more productive, much friendlier, and much, much, much happier when I'm given space to do as I please. I know that sounds selfish, but I thrive on my personal happiness and the love that I share with my family and with my wonderful girlfriend. Without that, I'd have nothing. I am grateful everyday that I get to keep those things, and so should the rest of you.

It's time for both liberals and conservatives to stand together to oppose this horrid violation of freedom. If not for others, do it for yourself, your family, and the ones you love. This affects all of us, and we can shape our destiny if we just give it our all.

Don't let them take your livelihood and happiness away from you, for if you do, you will soon regret it. Remember these words, and your spirit will march forward to the drums of freedom:

"Give me liberty, or give me death!"

  1. It's interesting to see Dear Leader pick and choose which campaign promises he'll break and which he'll keep. In the case of the Patriot Act, it was one of those things he stridently fought against.

I guess he likes the "domestic terrorist" powers when you consider that everyone who doesn't agree with him defaults to the category of domestic terrorist.

I agree. He is such a liar. He's not really "changing," anything. He's just furthering the agenda of the previous administration. If anyone wants to call that change, they can go right ahead. He told his supporters that he was going to fundamentally change our country, which translates into throwing out our founding principles for Progressive utopianism. Unfortunately, this isn't something new; it's been in the works for decades.

  3. Sad to see the same thing is happening here. Civil liberties are being taken away in the name of counter-terrorism, and then the measures are used to harass normal civilians. Makes me wonder who the real terrorists are.
